ORIGINAL, ANTIQUE, INDO PERSIAN SAHARAN TUAREG 'TAKOUBA' BROAD SWORD with TOOLED LEATHER SCABBARD - Measuring 39-1/4 inches in the Scabbard, Sword: 39 inches long, with 33-1/4 inch double-edge Blade that bears Maker's Marks on both sides (as Shown in Photos below) -The takouba (takooba, takuba) is a style of sword traditionally associated with the Tuareg, a nomadic people predominantly of Berber origin showing varying degrees of Negroid cultural and biological influences among the different clans. The Tuareg long dominated the central and west-central areas of the Sahara desert (including portions of what is now Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, and Morocco) and had a reputation as effective warriors and as highwaymen, exacting heavy tolls from trans-Saharan caravans for over a millennium. **** The iron Grip and 'Crusade' style Guard are normally covered with reddish-brown Leather, sometimes tooled, with a pyramid shaped Pommel consisting of alternating 'stacked' brass and copper. The typical blade tapers, especially distally, to a rounded point. The edges may be irregular from repeated sharpening, especially toward the tip. The method of sharpening leaves a roughly striated appearance on the flats of the blades adjacent to the edges, 0.5 to 1 cm. in width; the area within 20 to 30 cm. of the hilt is often not sharpened. The remainder of the blade usually has a roughened, mottled and pitted appearance. While corrosion over a long period of time might create such a pattern, in many instances, it appears more likely to be a surface left from incomplete finishing after forging. Indeed, the usual narrow central fullers (grooves) running parallel to the length of the blade from the hilt often appear to be ground, having striations, and sometimes do not show the degree of pitting and irregularities otherwise characterizing the rest of the surface. The typical blade will have three such fullers, the central being longer than those on either side. It is said that some of the early Tuareg Swords were made with Blades from European Swords that were captured during the Crusades - Additional Photos Below - Item #wea-215 - ($750.)

RARE, ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, ANTIQUE, INDO-PERSIAN, SILVER KOFTGARI (Inlaid), TULWAR SWORD with a SHAMSHIR BLADE - Solid Steel Hilt that is predominately Inlaid with Nice, Silver Koftgari (as Shown in the Photos below) - The Hilt is mounted with a 2-7/8 inch Diameter Disc Pommel that is also Silver-Inlaid on the top and bottom sides, overlaid on top with a 12-Point Silver-Mounted 'Star', which is topped with a 1-1/8 inch diameter x 3/4 inch high Silver-Inlaid 'Tang-Button' - The Hilt wears a Decorative, Knuckle-Guard with some of Silver-Inlay remaining - Base of Hilt (below the Quillons) is mounted with Two, 1-3/8 inch long Silver-Inlaid Languets (one on each side of the Blade), that served a dual purpose; (1) They helped to secure the Sword within the Scabbard. (2) A Good Swordsman could often 'catch' the Opponent's Blade in one of the Languets, and with a quick twist of his wrist, either flip the Sword out of the enemy's hand, or break their Blade - Measuring 36-1/8 inches long overall (straight-line measurements), with a 32-1/4 inch long Shamshir Blade that remains sharp - Additional Photos Below - Item #wea-65 - ($850.)
